On June 24, the Korean American Society of Greater Kansas City (KASGKC) successfully held a ceremony commemorating the 76th anniversary of the Korean War, along with a FIFA World Cup cheering event for the South Korean national team, at Aspira Auditorium in Overland Park.
Approximately 200 Korean community members, local dignitaries, Korean War veterans, and their families attended the event. Together, they honored the dedication of the veterans who sacrificed for freedom and expressed their gratitude.
The commemorative ceremony included opening remarks, the singing of both national anthems, a prayer, congratulatory remarks from veterans and distinguished guests, and the presentation of appreciation plaques. It provided an opportunity to reflect once again on the noble sacrifices of Korean War veterans.
Following the ceremony, families, friends, and local residents gathered for the FIFA World Cup cheering event and passionately supported the South Korean national team in a spirit of unity. Attendees watched the match together on a large screen and enjoyed a variety of food, creating a place of harmony that brought together different generations and communities. Although South Korea suffered a disappointing 1–0 loss to South Africa, everyone united in supporting the national team and shared a meaningful sense of community and patriotism that transcended the outcome of the match. A portion of the event’s proceeds will also be used to support Korean War veterans.
